Mind the Map looks at the recent conflicts in Chechnya and the Caucasus region through the lens of literary Romanticism and it's relationship to expansionism. The project takes as its subject the famous Russian "poet of the Caucasus," Mikhail Lermontov, who served the Imperial Army during the Caucasian War - the first effort to colonize the region.
For the MFA thesis installation I produced a three dimensional collage: a mini-museum of history and personal narrative, where fiction and history books, photo cutouts from my trip to the Caucasus, video projections of a guided tour through the Stalin museum and an interview with the member of pro-Independence movement of Chechnya exist side by side in one aquarium-like display.
